The Northern Charter Bursary 2018

Deadline: 29th June

The Northern Charter Bursary 2018: Call Out

The Northern Charter Bursary offers artists working in the North East financial support, plus access to our project space for a period of up to six months to enable research, development and public presentation of new work in Newcastle City Centre.

We are offering three £750 bursaries for artists working in the North East. Two of the bursaries have been funded by Newcastle University and the Bartlett Endowment and will be offered to two graduate artists who have completed their degree in Fine Art at Newcastle University since 2016. The third bursary is available to anyone, of any age, working in any media or artform who is from or based in the North East.

In both cases, the bursary fund is not restricted in its use. Recipients are free to use it to cover materials, travel, research costs or to contribute to living costs while they develop new work.

We would like to hear from artists whose practice would be significantly aided by the opportunity to present work locally and within the context of The Northern Charter.

Along with the financial support of the bursary, artists will have access to our project space; an open plan working space in which we host live events, workshops and seminars. Bursary recipients will be able to book the project space for the practical development of work, or in conversation with The Northern Charter programming team run public events to share their ideas. Please note that the bursary scheme does not include a studio space or accommodate for the storage of large scale works or art materials.

To apply for a 2018 Northern Charter Bursary please send the following to thenortherncharter@gmail.com stating ‘BURSARY APPLICATION 2018’ in the email subject.

Up to 500 words describing the work you would like to do with the support of the bursary, including how you will make use of the project space and engage with our public programme.
Up to 300 words on why this bursary will support the development of your practice at this time.
Artist statement (up to 300 words).
Up to 5 images, audio files or video links to previous work.

Deadline for applications is June 29th

Bursary period runs from September 2018 (until February 2019 at the latest).

Applications will be reviewed and recipients selected by a panel of Northern Charter studio holders.

If you have any questions or would like to visit the project space in advance of applying, please email tessdenmancleaver@gmail.com

More about The Northern Charter
The Northern Charter is a collective of 18 artists working across contemporary art, performance, film and curating. We run a public programme that responds to and supports the development of studio holders’ practices.

The Northern Charter recognises the importance of flexible support and critical dialogue in the development of artistic practice. Our bursary is designed to enable artists to remain in the North East and contribute to the diversity of practices in the region. In 2017 the first Northern Charter Bursary was awarded to Holly Argent and Rene McBrearty to build the Women Artists of the North East Library.
